File Extensions: Types of Documents

     Sometimes you have a document and you don't know what you need to open it. Here's a list of some file extensions:

Office Documents:

.adp = MS Access project
.doc = MS Word document
.dot = MS Word template
.xls = MS Excel worksheet
.pdf = Adobe Acrobat document
.pps = MS PowerPoint Slideshow
.ppt = MS PowerPoint Presentation
.rtf = Rich Text Format (MS Word)
.txt = text file (Notepad, MS Word)
.wpd = Corel Word Perfect document

 

Graphics:

.jpg = JPEG photo (open in photo software or Web browser)
.gif = Gif photo (open in photo software or Web browser)
.psd = Adobe Photoshop image
.qxd = Quark Xpress document (desktop publishing)

 

Extensions you should never accept in an email because of virus dangers:

.scr = screen saver
.Trojan
.vbs
.pif
.hta
.reg
.bat
