Online Pedagogy/Instructional Design
1) Tips
and secrets for online teaching and learning: An inside view
Robert. M. Corderoy and Geraldine Lefoe, University of Wollongong.
"The purpose of this paper is three-fold. Firstly, we will
provide a background to online delivery. Secondly, we will outline
and discuss some of the issues and concerns associated with online
teaching and learning raised by "practitioners in the field".
Finally, an analysis of the discussion forum will provide some clear
guidelines for the utilisation of on-line teaching and learning
and a valuable insight for all those using and interested in using
online technologies for the delivery of course materials. "
2) Interactive
tutorials designed to encourage deeper learning practices
D.A. Weaver, T. Petrovic, et. al, University of Melbourne.
"This paper demonstrates an approach to the design of interactive
multi-media tutorials which encourages deeper learning practices
and which has broad application in other disciplines. "
3) Instructional
design meets online learning in higher education
Lou Siragusa Curtin University of Technology.
"Experience has shown that Web-based classroom facilitators
often work from models of other existing Web-based learning environments
as a basis to building their own Web site. In many cases, there
appears to be little evidence to suggest that sufficient consideration
is given to the use of good instructional design principles. This
observation has been echoed by various authors, educators and instructional
design evaluators who devote a considerable amount of time towards
online learning. This can be nearly always be attributed to the
limited time available to educators and online developers when developing
online learning environments. This paper, however, has presented
examples of where authors have highlighted the importance of the
need for good instructional design. This paper has also demonstrated
how thoughtful application of instructional design can lead to effective
learning strategies for students. "
4) Seven
principles of effective teaching: a practical lens for evaluating
online courses
Charles Graham, Kursat Cagiltay, Byung-Ro Lim, Joni Craner
and Thomas M. Duffy.
"The "Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate
Education," originally published in the AAHE Bulletin (Chickering
& Gamson, 1987), are a popular framework for evaluating teaching
in traditional, face-to-face courses. The principles are based on
50 years of higher education research (Chickering & Reisser,
1993). A faculty inventory (Johnson Foundation, "Faculty,"
1989) and an institutional inventory (Johnson Foundation, "Institutional,"
1989) based on these principles have helped faculty members and
higher-education institutions examine and improve their teaching
practices. "
5) Online
communities as a new learning paradigm: an interview with Paul Shrivastava
James L. Morrison and Paul Shrivastava.
"Paul Shrivastava is a professor of management at
Bucknell University and president of eSocrates.com, a Web site that
engages professors from throughout the world in collaborative teaching
of business management. The work that he and his staff at eSocrates
perform could well serve as a model for academic leaders of the
future. Shrivastava's approach, based on the concept of "online
learning communities," re-conceptualizes the technological
and pedagogical aspects of online learning."
6) Interactive
multimedia: educational desert or educational oasis?
David M. Kennedy, Multimedia Education Unit, The University
of Melbourne, Australia and Carmel McNaught, Academic Development
Unit, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia.
" ...The problem for an educator remains about how
to transform what is already known about what constitutes good practice
in the classroom and lecture halls into computer-aided learning
and the world of interactive multimedia (IMM). ...Laurillard argues
that learning is an iterative process in which students discuss,
interact, adapt and reflect on the knowledge they are striving to
assimilate.... This paper discusses how the theoretical framework
of Ramsden, and Laurillardís perspective on teaching and
learning may be incorporated into the IMM design process. "
7) Sharing
(hyper)texts: using the web to foster collaborative learning
David Michael Silver, Department of American Studies University
of Maryland, College Park.
"The following essay traces one strategy for incorporating
computers, the Internet, and the World Wide Web into a Humanities
course. It explores the exercises we used to teach, learn about,
and engage students in the study of American material culture. In
particular, this essay examines the ways in which the Web was used
to foster a collaborative learning environment."
8) Designing
instruction for web-based distance learning
Distance Learning Resource Network
"Would you like to know more about online teaching
and learning? Are you interested in teaching a class via the Web
or turning your existing class into an online course? If you answered
yes to these questions, the Distance Learning Resource Network’s
"Designing Instruction for Web-Based Distance Learning"
is for you. This guide will help you design a course or materials
for the Web or convert an existing course into an online course.
